Dobrawa Czocher – State Of Matter

Out March 27th, 2026. First single “Blue” out now, accompanied by a striking new music video

Acclaimed Polish cellist and composer Dobrawa Czocher announces her second album, State of Matter, released March 27th, 2026 via 130701. A deeply contemplative yet sonically expansive work, the album marks a significant evolution in Czocher’s artistic language, embracing transformation, vulnerability, and the quiet courage required to move forward.

Written following her relocation from Warsaw to Poland’s Baltic coast, State of Matter is profoundly shaped by its environment. Surrounded by forests and the vast, shifting presence of the sea, Czocher channels nature’s scale and fluidity into a body of work that reflects on change as both an internal and physical force. The album unfolds as a meditation on motion and stillness, fragility and resolve—mirroring the ever-changing states suggested by its title.

For this new chapter, Czocher expands both her instrumentation and her compositional approach. Percussive cello techniques intertwine with Moog synthesisers, non-analog electronics, and—appearing for the first time in her work—her own layered voice. These elements exist in delicate symbiosis with her classical foundations, revealing new textures and emotional depth while pushing beyond familiar creative boundaries.

Recorded at the historic Studio S4 at Polish Radio in Warsaw with engineer Mateusz Danek, State of Matter balances meticulous craft with expressive freedom. Inspired by composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach and Zoltán Kodály, alongside contemporary figures including Max Richter and Steve Reich, the album breathes with rhythmic subtlety and quiet intensity—music that listens as much as it speaks.

The album’s first single, “Blue,” is released today alongside a striking and immersive music video that visually extends the album’s central themes of water, movement, and transformation. Rhythm-driven and fluid in form, the track introduces a layered “choir” constructed entirely from Czocher’s own voice, adding new intimacy and warmth to her sonic palette.

“Water served as my starting point,” Czocher explains. “A poetic metaphor for exploring states of concentration and the quest for answers.”

The announcement of State of Matter follows the release of Czocher’s July 2025 EP, Sonata for Solo Cello: Joanna’s Tale, a powerful three-movement work commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising.

Hailed as “one of Europe’s most esteemed contemporary cellists” (Loud & Quiet), Dobrawa Czocher is internationally recognised for her versatility as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral performer. Renowned for expanding the expressive range of the cello, she moves fluidly between classical tradition and contemporary experimentation, combining technical precision with a vivid sense of imagination.

Czocher began her musical journey at the age of seven, later studying at Warsaw’s Chopin University of Music and Germany’s Hochschule für Musik in Detmold. She has served as a lead soloist with the Mieczysław Karłowicz Symphony Orchestra and has maintained a long-standing collaboration with pianist Hania Rani. Together, the duo released Biała Flaga (2015) and Inner Symphonies (2021) via Deutsche Grammophon, establishing themselves as leading voices in contemporary classical music.

With State of Matter, Dobrawa Czocher emerges in her most expansive and assured form yet—embracing change, deepening her sound, and inviting listeners into a space of reflection, motion, and quiet transformation.
