Momentary Movements of Landscapes is Juha Mäki-Patola’s third solo album and his debut release for FatCat’s 130701 imprint. The record consists of twelve carefully composed and intricately layered pieces—each a moment of introspection and calm, evoking imagined landscapes and atmospheric, meditative sound worlds.
Built around upright piano and Prophet 10 loops processed through tape echo and reverb, the album creates a series of light drones and flowing textures. These pieces were recorded during the dark Nordic winter of 2024–2025, a time that led Mäki-Patola to seek solace through the beauty of memory and imagination. The resulting soundscapes blend past experiences and subconscious impressions with the present, forming immersive sonic snapshots that suggest stillness, emotion, and healing.
Inspired in part by a Pitchfork Perfect10 feature in which Anohni spoke so poetically of William Basinski’s Variations: A Movement in Chrome Primitive, Mäki-Patola—a longtime admirer of tape loop album artists such as Basinski and 130701 alumni Ian William Craig—explored the expressive potential of looping piano and synthesizer textures. His aim was to create gentle, resonant feedback loops and repetitive motifs that feel organic, drifting, and timeless.
The album’s foundation was laid during an intensive few weeks in Mäki-Patola’s Helsinki studio, where he recorded each piece live, using tape-based processing techniques. These improvisations became the core of the record, later enriched with subtle overdubs from piano, synth, ambient noise, and voice. He also invited several collaborators—Jessica Hébert, Tapani Rinne, Julia Gjertsen, and his daughter Frida Mäki-Patola—to contribute violin, bass clarinet, and vocals, adding depth and intimacy to the compositions.
Rooted in a deep connection to Nordic nature, Momentary Movements of Landscapes evokes imagery of forests, shorelines, and dreamlike states. Its lush, immersive textures suggest a form of waking sleep—music that gently suspends time, offering emotional refuge and reflection. The album provides a sonic space to pause, drift, and reconnect with the elemental: earth, wind, water, and the unseen.
Combining ambient minimalism with modern classical nuance, Mäki-Patola continues to develop a distinct sonic language—merging genre-blurring aesthetics with a tactile sense of place. Momentary Movements of Landscapes is an invitation to listen deeply and lose oneself in its gentle, undulating embrace.
Juha Mäki-Patola is a Helsinki-based musician / composer / producer. He has been an active member on Finland’s music scene for over a decade, serving as a member of several bands and working behind-the-scenes as a producer, musician, and recording/mixing/mastering engineer for both local and international artists from various genres. All of this experience helped steer his vision towards the type of music he desired to compose and produce under his own name. Inspired by the great modern classical composers of this era such as Jóhann Jóhannsson, Nils Frahm and Max Richter as well as pioneering artists such as Brian Eno, Philip Glass, and Arvo Pärt, Juha began to create introspective and reflective instrumental pieces that sought a specific calmness – compelling but unhurried. With this he arrived on the international scene fully formed with his debut solo record 'Breath' in 2020 released by Hush Hush Records (Seattle, US). The record was met with widespread acclaim, catching the eye of critics and journalists as well as fellow artists. He received a wealth of requests to collaborate on new material, and has in the years since released several collaborative and solo genre-bending EPs and albums, released by record labels such as Moderna Records (CA) and Hush Hush Records (US).
